About us - WHO WE ARE
PROBUS, as an organisation, was started in the UK in 1963. A group of men on the verge of retirement wanted to continue with the pleasure of meeting. The name was created from a combination of two syllables of the words PROfessional and BUSiness.
We have two clubs in our town. One is called Sherborne and we are called CASTLETON. We meet at The Grange, Oborne on alternate Thursdays.
We are not a service club like Round Table, Rotary or Lions, (though many of our members have been in one or more of these in the past) nor are we a Charity. Quite simply our fellowship consists of:-Meeting once a fortnight with a range of fascinating speakers throughout the year- A varying number of members will stay for lunch, which is not mandatory- We organise a small number of events (outings and visits) throughout the year- We currently have around 35 members.
Our meetings are characterised by a wealth of humour and a deep fascination with the topics brought by our speakers. The Q& A session at the end of the talk invariably generates personal recollections from our members. Within & beyond the meetings, there is a convivial culture of respect and support.
